The NFL regular-season has come to a close, and with it may come some changes among current head coaches. On the Monday following the end of the regular season, known as Black Monday, a wave of head coaches and front office executives are let go as teams that had disappointing seasons change leadership.
NFL Coaches fired
Two coaches were fired after the season last year. Anthony Lynn and Doug Marrone were fired by the Chargers and Jaguars, respectively. Two teams already have interim head coaches, with Darrell Bevell leading the Jaguars after Urban Meyer was fired and Rich Bisaccia leading the Raiders after Jon Gruden resigned.
Other teams will likely hire new coaches to lead their teams in 2022. The Sporting News tracks which teams will make coaching changes on “Black Monday.”

Will the Bears fire Matt Nagy?
It has long been talked about that this will be the final season in Chicago for Matt Nagy. The 2018 NFL Coach of the Year has led the Bears to their first losing season under his leadership, but it will be the second time in his four years at the helm that Chicago has missed the playoffs.
Much of the concern with Nagy at the helm has been the inability to develop first-round quarterbacks. Mitch Trubisky was taken second overall in 2017, but never developed into the star the Bears were hoping for. Following a season of struggles from 2021 11th-overall pick Justin Fields, the Bears are looking for someone who can make sure the former Ohio State signal-caller is the face of the franchise moving forward.
According to reports, Nagy came into Sunday’s game against the Vikings knowing that it would be his last with the Bears. And on Saturday, CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported that Sunday would be his final game coaching Chicago. The Bears lost 31-17 to Minnesota to finish the season 31-17.
Are the Bears going to fire Matt Nagy?
There has long been talk that Matt Nagy will retire after this season. Chicago’s 2018 NFL Coach of the Year has steered the Bears to their first losing season under his leadership, but it will be the second time in his four years at the helm that Chicago misses the playoffs.
Nagy has been criticized for not developing first-round quarterbacks with Nagy at the helm. In 2017, the Bears selected Mitch Trubisky second overall, but he never developed into the star they expected. The Bears are looking for someone to ensure former Ohio State signal-caller Justin Fields is the face of the franchise moving forward after he struggled this season.
Ragy knew Sunday’s game against the Vikings would be his last with the Bears, according to reports. On Saturday, CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported that Sunday would be his last game coaching Chicago. The Bears finished 31-17 against Minnesota.
Will the Vikings fire Mike Zimmer? NFL coaches fired
Following Sunday’s game between the Vikings and Bears, another change in the NFC North is likely. As a result, Minnesota has experienced its second consecutive losing season, marking the first time since Mike Zimmer took over as head coach that they have had consecutive sub-.500 seasons. The Vikings’ defense was also among the worst in the league for the second consecutive season.
According to The Athletic, Vikings ownership met last week to discuss personnel changes in both the head coaching and general manager positions. A decision on the future of both Zimmer and Spielman may be made on Monday. CBS Sports’ La Canfora reported on Saturday that the team is expected to move on from Zimmer at the end of the season.

In his final game of the season, Zimmer defeated the Bears 31-17 to finish 8-9. Zimmer said, according to ESPN, that the decision on his future is not up to him, and that he didn’t want to discuss it.
Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman have been fired by the Vikings. Zimmer finished his Vikings tenure with a 72-56 record.
Joe Judge will the Giants be fired?
In December, SNY reported that Giants’ co-owner John Mara is confident that Joe Judge can remain as head coach in New York. It appears that the biggest change for New York this offseason will be in the front office with the likely retirement or dismissal of general manager Dave Gettleman. Despite the second straight losing season under Judge, Gettleman might appear safe despite the swirling reports that he will not return.
After his team’s crushing loss to the Bears in Week 17, Judge went on a bizarre rant where he defended his team and said many former Giants wish they were still playing. With the performance since that report (0-3, outscored 84-19) combined with his tirade, it’s possible that Mara will fire both Gettleman and Judge and just start all over again. However, no Giants coach has lasted longer than two seasons since Tom Coughlin’s resignation. New York might want to give Judge one more chance to turn the tide.
Judge ended the season with a 22-7 loss to Washington, falling to 4-13 overall. The team made the puzzling decision to have the quarterback sneak on 3rd-and-9.
Are the Broncos going to fire Vic Fangio?
It was reported that Vic Fangio had to lead the Broncos to the playoffs in 2021 or he would be fired after the season. However, even after being eliminated from the playoff hunt, Fangio remains as head coach.
That doesn’t mean Fangio will still be around in 2022. Florio reported in December that Fangio was already a candidate for termination. After new ownership takes over the team in 2022 and he already works under a general manager who didn’t hire him, Fangio could be on his way out with new faces at the top looking to make a change. After his team’s final game against the Chiefs on Saturday, La Canfora reported that Fangio won’t be back.
Six top candidates to replace Vic Fangio as Broncos head coach
After losing to the Chiefs 28-24 in Week 18, the Denver Broncos fired Vic Fangio on Sunday morning. Fangio went 19-30 in his three seasons as head coach.
